CenturyLink outage takes down remote schooling, other providers

An apparent fiber cut in Rocky Mount caused a Friday morning CenturyLink outage that made remote learning impossible for some area students, as well as impacted other local providers, including Mediacom.

Tideland Electric Cooperative reported the outage was the result of a fiber cut, and that their phone lines were out.

Currituck County Schools shared OBXToday’s Facebook post about the outage with a shrug emoji and a “Happy Friday!” Student families were told all school work would be posted online as soon as possible.

The outage appears to have started about midnight. There was no word late Friday on when service might be restored.
