Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie is warning the public to be aware of a new scam where con artists are posing as law-enforcement.

Scammers have been calling Dare County residents saying they are Captain Moran and there is a warrant for their arrest. The caller wants the citizen to stay on the phone and get a prepaid money card to pay for the phony warrant.

The Sheriff’s Office does not collect money for warrants.

Safety Tips:
– Do not believe your caller I.D. Scammers can fake caller I.D. numbers
– Spot imposters that claim to be from a Government entity or charitable organization. Do
not give out personal information and/or do not pay with a credit card over the phone.
– Do not be in a hurry to make a decision.
– Hang up on robocalls
– Do not make wire / electronic money transfers to an unknown person.
