The world’s largest system of privately-owned campgrounds, Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA), is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2022.
To commemorate the event, Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks KOA Resort is planning a special birthday celebration. Beginning on Saturday, September 24 and taking place throughout the weekend, the event is open to camping guests.
The first KOA was built near Billings, MT as a stopover for tourists traveling to Seattle’s Century 21 Exposition (World’s Fair). Dave Drum, a local businessman and entrepreneur, set up a modest campground and charged guests $1.75 a night to pitch tents or park travel trailers. The campground offered private fire rings and picnic tables as well as a store, laundry and hot showers.
Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks KOA Resort will be celebrating KOA’s 60th anniversary with a classic camping weekend.
On Saturday, the campground will be throwing a 60s dance party with live music from the Yacht Dogs. Additionally, guests are invited to enjoy birthday cake and cupcakes in 60s style. Themed crafts, like vintage tie dye, will also be offered.
Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks KOA Resort is located at 25099 NC Hwy 12 in Rodanthe. To make camping reservations, please call Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks KOA Resort at 252-987-2307 or visit their website.
