Swells’a Brewing Beer Company, the only ocean-view brewery in the Outer Banks, has donated $11,550 to Outer Banks Forever, the official nonprofit partner of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial, through its 1% For the Planet membership.
1% For the Planet was founded by Yvon Chouinard and Craig Mathews in 2002 to encourage companies to give back by donating 1% of gross sales to organizations that work to protect the environment. Since its founding, 1% For the Planet has grown into a global network of more than 5,000 members.
“We are so inspired by the team at Swells’a and their commitment to protecting our unique local history and environment,” said Jessica Barnes, Director of Outer Banks Forever. “It’s amazing to see a newer local business dedicate this type of ongoing support to our national parks.”
Each year, Swells’a Brewing Beer Company will commit 1% of its gross sales to help Outer Banks Forever in its mission to protect and enhance the Outer Banks national parks now and forever. As part of their partnership, Outer Banks Forever and Swells’a Brewing Beer Company also collaborate to host “Pints for Parks” events throughout the year, which encourage locals and visitors to come to the brewery for evenings that are both fun and educational.
“Swells’a Brewing was built on the magic of the Outer Banks. The rolling dune lines, barren beaches and the allure of the Atlantic Ocean all had a play in the shaping of our characters and our business,” said Sam Harriss, Co-Owner and Artistic Director at Swells’a Brewing Beer Company. “The name ‘Swells’a Brewing’ is a pun on the dynamics of the ocean and our beer; there is Swells’a beer brewing in the tanks and we pray a little swell is a’brewing in the ocean out front. Our focus is always community first, but beer is our way to folks’ hearts! We believe in the process and using premium ingredients to create a wide array of styles from modern and hazy IPAs to rum barrel aged Porters.
“As small business owners and stewards for the environment we make conscientious decisions toward the future of our planet. Donating 1% of gross sales to our national parks, recycling our spent grain, water filling stations and beach cleanups are a few small gestures. We believe the answers start at the top and you shouldn’t have to sacrifice to do the right thing, because just a visit and a beer in our taproom is a step in the right direction.” |
