Dare County Soil & Water Conservation District accepting applications for 2023 Resource Conservation Workshop

The Dare County Soil & Water Conservation District (DSWCD) has announced the opportunity for a Dare County student to attend the 2023 Resource Conservation Workshop (RCW) at North Carolina State University’s campus in Raleigh from June 25, 2023 to June 30, 2023—a $575 value—at no charge.

The Resource Conservation Workshop was started 60 years ago in an effort to provide students with a taste of the various fields of natural resources conservation. The district is primarily looking for students who are interested or potentially interested in a career in natural resources management, agriculture, fisheries and wildlife conservation/management, as well as other related fields.

This opportunity is open to rising high school freshmen through rising high school seniors. Graduating seniors are not eligible. One Dare County student as well as an alternate student will be selected, and each will be contacted once they have been chosen. Parents will be required to sign a release once their student is chosen.

To apply, students must fill out an application, which is available at the link below. Please note that the final question on the application—which requires students to express their interest in conservation in 250 words or less—must be completed via word-processing software, such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs, then saved as a PDF.

Please submit the completed application to DSWCD Community Conservationist Charlie Sanders at Charlie.Sanders@DareNC.gov. Please make the subject line of the email “Resource Conservation Workshop, <Student Name>”. Be sure to include first and last names. Both documents—the application form as well as the PDF detailing the candidate’s interest in conservation—can be attached to the same email.

Applications can also be printed and returned in person to the DSWCD office, which is located within the Dare County Planning Department office at the Dare County Administration Building (954 Marshall C. Collins Drive in Manteo) or mailed to the Dare County Soil & Water Conservation District, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC, 27954.

The DSWCD board will vote at its May 2, 2023 meeting to choose the student and an alternate. The chosen student will be notified through the email address that they provide on their application. They will also be expected to meet with DSWCD staff before going to the workshop, as well as to give a short oral report to the DSWCD board about their experience at their next board meeting.
