Lenovo, a Fortune Global 500 technology company, has donated $13,000 in technology to Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) to update its Emergency Management Command Van. The donation stems from the school’s recent partnership with Lenovo for the Work For Humankind initiative.
The ECSU Command Van serves an important role in not only exposing students to the latest in technology to solve real world problems, but help serve the community with projects such as research, disaster response, public education and more.
“For Lenovo to upgrade the van with new technology greatly enhances the opportunities for the students to learn and to help our communities be more resilient to disasters while encouraging the students of the future to consider careers in the Aviation and Emergency Management fields,” said Dr. Kevin Kupietz, chairperson of ECSU’s Department of Aviation and Emergency Management.

The donation was part of Lenovo and ECSU’s partnership on Work for Humankind, Lenovo’s campaign to change how people work, for good. For the campaign’s activation in Lenovo’s home state of North Carolina, students from ECSU were equipped with cutting-edge Lenovo technology – from devices to solutions and services – to enable them to complete coursework while making a three-week-long trek along North Carolina’s longest trail: the Mountains-To-Sea Trail. While on their journey, students stopped in the Outer Banks, Burgaw, and Cherokee Region to work on local conservation projects alongside local leaders and Lenovo employees.
Lenovo’s Work for Humankind kicked off last year when ambitious volunteers had the opportunity to make a positive, long-lasting difference on Robinson Crusoe Island, off the coast of Chile, whilst working from one of the most remote offices in the world. Leveraging Lenovo technology, these volunteers donated their professional skills while working their regular jobs completely remotely to support vital conservation efforts led by Island Conservation and the Robinson Crusoe Island community.
Changing the Face of Conservation
The North Carolina activation of Work For Humankind is among several initiatives led by Lenovo that aims to strengthen the ties between the technology sector in North Carolina and the state’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. A National Park survey found just 6% of National Park visitors are Black, while 77% are white. Through Work For Humankind, Lenovo and Elizabeth City State University are changing the face of conservation by including underrepresented groups in efforts to solve complex environmental issues of our time.
