Volunteers sought for The Wall That Heals coming this fall - OBX Today

The Dare County Veterans Advisory Council is seeking volunteers to assist when The Wall That Heals—a traveling, three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.—is on display at The Soundside Event Site in Nags Head from Thursday, November 16, 2023 through Sunday, November 19, 2023. Volunteers are still needed to help direct visitors at the site and to disassemble the Wall before it begins its journey to the next location. Training is provided, and each volunteer will also receive a t-shirt.

The Wall That Heals Event Site Staffing:

Staffing volunteers act as ambassadors for our community and provide a friendly face to help ensure that visitors to The Wall That Heals feel welcome while touring the site. The Wall That Heals will be open to visitors 24 hours a day during its time in Dare County, so volunteers who are willing to work an evening or overnight shift at the site are of particular importance. Staffing volunteers are currently still needed for the following shifts:

  • Wednesday, November 15, 2023: 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.
  • Thursday, November 16, 2023: 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.
  • Saturday, November 18, 2023: 12 a.m. to 4 a.m., 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and         8 p.m. to 12 a.m.
  • Sunday, November 19, 2023: 12 a.m. to 4 a.m., 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Disassemble Volunteers:

These volunteers will disassemble and pack The Wall That Heals so it can travel to its next destination. No equipment is required, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) will supply all tools and gloves. The heaviest panel weighs 40 pounds, and a VVMF site manager will coach volunteers through the process. At least 20 disassemble volunteers are currently still needed to assist on Sunday, November 19, 2023, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
