Dare County battens down the hatches, announces full list of cancellations & closures due to adverse weather - OBX Today

Dare County is currently under a Tropical Storm Warning, Storm Surge Warning, Flood Watch and High Surf Advisory due to the expected impacts from an area of low pressure that is expected to develop off the southeastern coast of the United States. This system—which is currently identified as Potential Tropical Cyclone Sixteen by the National Hurricane Center—could become Tropical Storm Ophelia. Due to the impacts that are expected to affect our area, several Dare County departments, offices and facilities will operate on a modified schedule on Friday, September 22, 2023. Any Dare County offices and facilities that are not mentioned below will operate on a normal schedule until further notice.

Dare County Public Works:

Dare County Public Works has announced that trash collection will operate on a regular schedule until further notice. After your trash is collected on Friday, September 22, 2023, please secure your trash cans ahead of the severe weather.

The Dare County C&D Landfill and Transfer Station located in Manns Harbor as well as the Buxton Transfer Station located in Buxton will be closed tomorrow, Saturday, September 23, 2023 due to inclement weather. Dare County Public Works anticipates that these facilities will reopen on Monday, September 25, 2023.

Dare County Airport:

Dare County Regional Airport 80th Anniversary Celebration:
The Dare County Regional Airport’s 80th Anniversary Celebration that was scheduled to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2023 has been canceled. Dare County Parks & Recreation:

Hatteras Island Division (Fessenden Center in Buxton):

All soccer practices scheduled for Friday, September 22, 2023 have been canceled. All other activities that are scheduled to take place after 12 p.m. on Friday, September 22, 2023 have also been canceled, including pickleball and the “Core and More” class. The Fessenden Center will be open until 5 p.m. on Friday, September 22, 2023. All soccer games scheduled for Saturday, September 23, 2023 have been canceled. In addition, Chair Yoga and Mindful Yoga classes are also canceled. The Fessenden Center will reopen and resume normal hours for all activities and programming beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2023. Northern Beach Division (Family Recreation Park in Kill Devil Hills):

All afternoon activities scheduled to take place on Friday, September 22, 2023 have been canceled. This includes football practices, soccer practices, cheerleading, gymnastics and dance classes. There will be no pickleball after 11:30 a.m. The Dare County Youth Center at Family Recreation Park in Kill Devil Hills and the Dare County Parks and Recreation Department’s Northern Beach Division offices in Kill Devil Hills will both close at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 22, 2023. All activities that are scheduled for Saturday, September 23, 2023 have also been canceled, and the Youth Center at Family Recreation Park will remain closed. The Youth Center at Family Recreation Park is currently expected to reopen at 12 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2023 for scheduled pickleball. Roanoke Island Division (Lions Club Center in Manteo):

All afternoon activities scheduled to take place on Friday, September 22, 2023 have been canceled. This includes soccer games and practices, football games and practices, and cheerleading games. Dance classes at the Lions Club Center in Manteo that were scheduled for Friday, September 22, 2023 and Saturday, September 23, 2023 are also canceled. There will be no pickleball after 11:30 a.m. The Lions Club in Manteo will be open for any after-school kids beginning at 11:30 a.m. and closing at 5 p.m. The Roanoke Island/Mainland Parks and Recreation Division offices will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 22, 2023. All activities scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 23, 2023 are canceled. Activities are currently expected to resume on their normal schedule beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2023. Baum Senior Center:

The Baum Senior Center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, September 22, 2023; however, all programs, classes and activities that were scheduled to take place after 12 p.m. on Friday, September 22, 2023—including fitness classes, rummikub, bridge card play and billiards—have been canceled. These programs will resume on their normal schedule beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2023. For more information, please call the Baum Senior Center at 252-475-5635.

Dare County Library:

All three branches of the Dare County Library will be closed on Saturday, September 23, 2023. Book drops in Nags Head and Southern Shores will also be closed, and late fees will be waived for books that are due from Friday, September 22, 2023 through Sunday, September 24, 2023.

National Park Service:

The National Park Service has announced that Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Oregon Inlet, Cape Point, Frisco and Ocracoke campgrounds will close at 12 p.m. on Friday, September 22, 2023. The campgrounds will reopen once post-storm assessments are completed. Additional visitor facilities may also close ahead of severe weather impacts. Hatteras Inlet Ferry Operations:
