On January 1, 2024, at 4:42 a.m., the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department responded to a report of a structure on the 400 block of E. Fresh Pond Drive. Upon arrival, responding units confirmed that the fire was on the front deck of the home.
Due to working smoke alarms, four adults and two children were safely alerted and evacuated from a structure without injury. Although the fire was extinguished, there was damage to the front deck area.
The Fire Marshal investigated the fire and determined that it started below the deck in the trash can, before spreading to the deck above. The cause of the fire was accidental, resulting from the occupants disposing of fireworks debris in the trash can.
The Kill Devil Hill Fire Department would like to remind everyone to soak fireworks debris in a non-combustible container filled with water, preferably overnight, and then dispose of it in the trash can.
Fire crews from Colington, Kitty Hawk, and Nags Head assisted in the operation. The Kill Devil Hills Police Department, Dare County EMS, and the Sheriff’s Department were also on the scene to provide aid.
