Elizabeth City man collects $1 million Powerball win - OBX Today

Claude Banks III of Elizabeth City took a chance on a $2 Powerball ticket and won a $1 million prize on Monday.

Banks bought his lucky Quick Pick ticket from Zoom In on South Hughes Boulevard in Elizabeth City. His ticket matched the numbers on all five white balls to win the prize. The odds of that win are 1 in 11.6 million.

He claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, Banks took home $715,001.

Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot stands at $1.09 billion as an annuity, or $527.3 million in cash. If won, it would be the fourth largest jackpot win in Powerball history. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.

Powerball is one of six games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.
