On April 22, 2024, at 5:14 p.m., the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department responded to a structure fire on the 2000 block of Smithfield Street. Upon arrival, firefighters quickly worked to contain a fire that started on the back of the house to the utility room. The fire did not get into the main living area of the house. While there was significant damage to the utility room, there were no injuries reported. The sole occupant evacuated safely.

Fire crews from Colington and Kitty Hawk assisted in the operation. The Kill Devil Hills Police Department and Dare County EMS were also on scene to provide aid.

The Kill Devil Hills Fire Marshal is investigating to determine the fire’s cause.

The Kill Devil Hill Fire Department would like to emphasize the importance of having properly working smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms serve as a first line of defense against fires. They aid in the early detection of fires, which could potentially save lives by providing timely warnings to occupants to evacuate a building. Additionally, they can help minimize property damage.
