Singer-songwriter honors history of Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station in new music video, announces tour - OBX Today

Independent artist Skylar Gudasz has released the music video for her song “Lovestorypastlife” which appears on her forthcoming album COUNTRY, out tomorrow August 9, 2024, on Perseids Records. The video, shot at the 150-year-old Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station in the Outer Banks dually serves as the cover of the album.

The tone and vibe of the song blends seamlessly with the cinematic quality of the clip, as the captivating track is a solemn reflection on a faded love in which Gudasz sings, “Who are you bringing your flowers to now?/  You don’t come around / Who are you bringing your flowers to now? / Along the cavalcade of days / Seasons play across your face / Is our love story just a past life now?”

The location is significant for Gudasz, who had a vision long ago that ultimately came to fruition. She shares, “The album artwork for COUNTRY was derived from the video for “Lovestorypastlife.” Chicamacomico Life-saving station is on the Outer Banks, a stretch of remote barrier islands in North Carolina where I used to live that have long been notorious for shipwrecks due to the shallow shoals. These lifesaving stations, only a handful of which are still standing, were historically manned by a crew that would patrol the beach for ships in distress during storms, hurricanes, anytime of year. The drill team pictured on the album runs the lifesaving drill that has been in practice at the station since its beginning. The “canon” you see was actually created with the intention of saving lives – it shoots a rope to the ship to be tied to the mast so a buoy can be pulleyed between the ship and the shore. This ended up being the perfect visual representation of the album – the ever-changing border being navigated between land and sea, people and nature, and the wilderness at the heart of COUNTRY.’

Gudasz adds, “I visited this hauntingly beautiful station as a kid and had longed dreamed of shooting something here. When my film crew got involved, it became clearer our vision was going to include the drill team, if they were willing. The shoot was one of the most rewarding creative experiences of my life. Our film crew was all women, the incredible Sandra Katharine Davidson & Cameron Laws & Lisa Ramsden, all of whom have ties to the greater area, and we were able to be on location there and at the nature preserve on Pea Island for several days. The Chicamacomico Association generously gave us pretty free rein to artistically explore the space and their work. And we’ll partner again to perform a concert on Sept 19th on the lawn in front of the ocean by the Life-Saving Station, to celebrate their 150th anniversary.” The local Island Free Press published an article about the concert that offer greater insight into the  history and Gudasz’s passion for the landmark and surrounding area.

COUNTRY was produced by Skylar Gudasz and Ari Picker and is the follow up to her acclaimed 2020 sophomore release Cinema. The album which garnered a four-star review from MOJO.
