The 12th Annual Outer Banks Veterans Writing Workshop will be held at the UNC Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, November 9 and Sunday, November 10.
This year’s event will be a hands-on songwriting workshop led by singer/songwriter/producer Jana Pochop, singer/songwriter and recording engineer/producer Tony Rosario, and founder of the Veterans Writing Project Ron Capps, who is a songwriter, memoirist, and playwright.
The two-day workshop will cover song structure, basic chord functions, home producing/recording, getting the most out of your lyrics, putting everything together, being in front of an audience, and the life and business of being a singer-songwriter. There will also be time to write songs.
“Songwriters have never before had the plethora of tools so readily available as they do today,” said Founder and Vice President of Soldier Songs & Voices Tony Rosario. “In this workshop, we’ll open up the hood and take a look at some basics of turning ideas into songs in the digital age. All of the ideas we have planned for this workshop are geared toward giving the individual songwriter the freedom to create without limits.”
Workshop participants will also get to experience a free concert by their talented instructors.
“We hosted a Veterans Songwriting Workshop with these instructors in 2020, and the whole experience was virtual,” said Dare Arts Executive Director Jessica Sands. “The participants loved it back then, so we know that this year’s attendees are in for a wonderful and enriching in-person experience. We are so excited to get these world-class instructors from across the country to the Outer Banks to share their love of songwriting with Veterans, active-duty military and their families.”
Beginner and experienced songwriters are invited to participate in this two-day workshop that is free for Veterans, active-duty military and their family members. Participants are welcome to bring an instrument if they choose to.
Registration for the writing workshop is now open at DareArts.org/veterans. Registration is required. Attendees will receive a confirmation email with more details after they sign up. The workshop will accommodate up to 25 participants.
Modeled after the Veterans Writing Project, a non-profit foundation that teaches combat Veterans to express their military experiences through literature, the goal of the Outer Banks Veterans Writing Project is to teach enrolled applicants the art of writing and self-expression.
The Outer Banks Veterans Writing Workshop is part of Outer Banks Veterans Week, which will take place November 4-11.
Dare Arts will be creating the Outer Banks Veterans Week calendar of events, which is a free digital directory of ceremonies, events, and specials for Veterans from Corolla to Hatteras Village.
Businesses, individuals and groups interested in listing their Veteran ceremonies, events and/or specials in the calendar of events should email DareArtsInfo@gmail.com.
