The Duck Police Department is investigating a low-speed vehicle crash that occurred in the Ocean Dunes subdivision of Duck, North Carolina which left one person injured.
On Thursday, August 15, 2024 at approximately 3:15 p.m., the Duck Police Department, Duck Fire Department, and Dare County EMS were called to an overturned low-speed vehicle involving three passengers at the intersection of Christopher Drive and Ocean Front Way. The rented low-speed vehicle was being driven by a 13- year-old minor, with a 21-year-old male passenger in the front seat and a 22- year- old female passenger in the rear- facing seat. The low- speed vehicle overturned as the driver veered off of the pavement and into a rut in the grass while turning left onto Ocean Front Drive. The low- speed vehicle sustained significant damage. The adult female passenger was transported to the Outer Banks Hospital with non- life-threatening injuries.
The 21- year- old male passenger stated that he allowed the 13-year-old to operate the low-speed vehicle illegally. Connor Coody of Orlando, Florida has been charged with permitting an unlicensed minor to drive a motor vehicle, which is a Class 2 Misdemeanor.
North Carolina law requires that drivers of low- speed vehicles must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver’s license to operate a low- speed vehicle. The Duck Police Department would like to remind the public of the importance of safe low- speed vehicle operation:
• Buckle Up: Always wear a seat belt, even at low speeds.
• Child passenger safety: Children should be in appropriate child safety seats, just like in a car.
• Obey Traffic Laws: LSVs must follow the same traffic laws as other vehicles.
• Be Visible: Use headlights, taillights, and turn signals, especially in low-light conditions.
• Maintain Vehicle: Regularly check tire pressure, brakes, and lights.
• Avoid Distractions: Focus on driving and avoid using cell phones or other distractions.
The Duck Police Department remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety of our community. We urge all residents and visitors to prioritize safety while operating low-speed vehicles.
