A rich slate of independent films, movie classics, documentaries, shorts, and world cinema plus film-related speakers, filmmaker discussions, and special events will comprise an exciting second season of the Outer Banks Film Society, which begins next week.
The first film of the 24/25 season, Asteroid City, will be screened at Dare Arts in downtown Manteo on Tuesday, September 17 at 6:30pm. Asteroid City is a 2023 Wes Anderson film set in a fictional desert town where a junior stargazing convention takes place. Its star cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, and Jeffrey Wright.
“I am thrilled about the film society’s upcoming season, and I am very much looking forward to seeing our members from last year along with some new faces,” said Outer Banks Film Society curator Gaye Morris. “Our mission is always to share the joy and appreciation of fine cinema while giving audiences varied and adventurous programming.”
Dare Arts is partnering with The Pioneer Theater to celebrate National Silent Movie Day on Sunday, September 29 at 4pm. The Pioneer Theater will be screening Buster Keaton’s 1928 film Steamboat Bill, Jr., which is a slapstick comedy about a young man who is put to work by his father, a riverboat captain about to be run out of business by a rival with a flashy new paddleboat. This event is free for all Outer Banks Film Society members and general admission is $5 per person.
“We are so excited to collaborate with our friends and neighbors at The Pioneer Theater to host National Silent Movie Day in downtown Manteo,” said Dare Arts Executive Director Jessica Sands. “Silent Movie Day was established in 2021 by film archivists to celebrate and preserve silent movies. The Pioneer Theater, founded in 1918, is the perfect venue to honor this vital part of cinema history.”
Back by popular demand, Outer Banks Film Society members will have the opportunity to participate in the 27th Annual MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival on Tuesday, October 1 at Dare Arts. During this event, film society members will discover their inner film critic by watching 10 short films and casting their vote for Best Film and Best Actor. Film lovers from over 500 venues across the globe will be participating in this event.
To participate in the Outer Banks Film Society, you join through an annual or seasonal membership. An annual membership is $140 and includes 12 films, plus member-only discounts for other film related events, including the Surfalorus Film Festival September 16-18, National Silent Movie Day, and the Outer Banks Environmental Film Festival in November. Seasonal (fall or winter) memberships include six films per season.
Film society memberships can be purchased online at DareArts.org/filmsociety, over the phone by calling Dare Arts, and in-person at the Dare Arts Gallery in Manteo. Please note that there are a limited number of film society memberships available.
All films will be screened at Dare Arts in Manteo, unless otherwise specified. Doors will open at 6pm and films will start at 6:30 p.m. Seating is first come, first served. The venue is accessible and has an elevator.
