Hurricane Kirk will pass well east of Eastern NC this weekend and early next week. However, powerful long period swell will lead to an increased risk of coastal impacts this weekend into early next week, reports the National Weather Service (NOAA).
Hurricane Kirk, while well east of Bermuda, is a very strong storm with winds in excess of 145mph, and is generating a lot of strong swell. This swell is forecast to begin arriving at area beaches Sunday, peaking Monday into Tuesday, and subsiding slowly through the rest of the work-week.
Beach erosion and ocean overwash impacts possible across portions of the Outer Banks. Higher than normal water levels will likely continue for areas along the coast.
More lives were lost in 2019 from Hurricane Lorenzo, a storm 2,000 miles away, than with Hurricane Dorian. You are urged to take the rip current threat from distant storms serious and adhere to any rules or restrictions implemented by your local officials, including Ocean Rescue.
