Dare County Sheriff’s Office reports communications outage affecting Hatteras, Ocracoke Island - OBX Today

A communications outage was reported at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Monday, affecting cell phone and internet service on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, which may include limited 911 service.

According to an alert from the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, a fiber optic cable was cut south of the Marc Basnight Bridge, which caused the outage.
The site of the cut appears to be near the Pea Island Visitor Center, per multiple reports.

According to Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative, the outage is not affecting the power grid, and there are currently no power outages on the island.
There is not an estimated time for restoration as of 3:00 p.m. Monday, although a repair crew has been dispatched.
Residents and visitors who need emergency services or communications are advised to go to their nearest volunteer fire department, with stations located in Hatteras, Frisco, Buxton, Avon and Rodanthe.
